Lasting Benefits of Cryotherapy

In the days that follow a cryotherapy session, your body will replenish itself. With the toxins removed you will enjoy many benefits such as increased range of motion, reduced inflammation, decreased pain, relief from migraines/headaches, and improved energy levels. If you follow-up your workout with a cryotherapy session, you’ll enjoy shortened recovery times.

Whether you’re seeking to ease inflammation in your joints, muscle soreness, or simply want to cleanse your body, Total Rejuvenation is the place for you. Schedule your first session online or come visit us. Walk-ins are welcome until 8pm!

Cleanse Your Body with Cryotherapy

The focus of Cryotherapy is to cleanse the blood. During exposure to temperatures below -166 degrees Fahrenheit your body goes into survival mode and brings your red blood cells back to your core (Vasoconstriction). During this process your blood runs through your cardiovascular system many more times than normal. This is beneficial because every time your blood runs through your cardivascular system it is supplied oxygen, nutrients, and enzymes while being stripped of toxins. Once you exit the cryo chamber the enriched and cleansed blood returns to the rest of your body (Vasodilation).

Imagine having all tension and achiness removed from your body within minutes. At Total Rejuvenation, relief becomes a reality! Through the use of our State-of-the-Art Cryotherapy machine your body will be surrounded with cold air. However, there is no reason to worry about being too cold at Total Rejuvenation. With our machine we can alternate between cold and warm air to best suit your needs. We have the only Cryo machine in the state of Iowa that has this capability.

Need a vacation from Iowa’s dry winter air? Try Halotherapy!!

Do you or your children suffer from allergies, eczema, stress, bronchitis, or sinus infections? If so, Halotherapy could be the right thing for you. Halotherapy (aka Salt Therapy, Dry Salt Therapy, Salt Rooms/Caves) is a treatment that involves inhaling salt in an aerosol form. This process dates back to the 11th century, when people would visit Eastern Europe’s natural salt caves to heal their ailments. In the 1840s, Dr. Boczkowski, a Polish doctor who was treating miners, started to study salt’s medicinal properties. He noticed that coal miners were plagued with all kinds of respiratory problems while salt miners were emerging with pristine lungs and no health complaints.

Today, you don’t have to travel to Eastern Europe to reap the benefits of Halotherapy. Thanks to Halogenerators we can bring the benefits of Salt Caves to Iowa, with Total Rejuvenation being Cedar Rapids’ first Salt Room!! The Halogenerator breaks down medical grade salt into an aerosol and vents it into the Salt Room. All you have to do is sit in the room, relax, listen to calming music, or catch up on a book.

Based on the findings that people who worked in the salt mines were sick less often than those who didn’t, halotherapy is a great complimentary healing option for multiple health concerns. The anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and moisturizing properties of pure mineral salt works to treat skin conditions as well. Would you like to schedule your first session? NormaTec Recovery

NormaTec is the leader in rapid recovery. Their systems give a competitive edge to the world’s elite athletes, coaches, and trainers. Their goal is to establish recovery as an integral part of every athlete’s training, and we feel NormaTec systems are the best way to accomplish that. The NormaTec PULSE Recovery Systems are dynamic compression devices designed for recovery and rehab. NormaTec’s uses their patented PULSE technology to help athletes recover faster between trainings and after performance.

The NormaTec Pulse Massage Pattern

PULSING: Instead of using static compression (squeezing) to transport fluid out of the limbs, Sequential Pulse Technology uses dynamic compression (pulsing). Our patented pulsing action more effectively mimics the muscle pump of the legs and arms, greatly enhancing the movement of fluid and metabolites out of the limbs after an intense workout.

GRADIENTS: Veins and lymphatic vessels have one-way valves that prevent fluid backflow. Similarly, NormaTec Pulse Technology uses hold pressures to keep fluids from being forced in the wrong direction. Because of this enhancement, instead of tapering pressure off, the PULSE and PULSE PRO can deliver maximum pressure in every zone.

DISTAL RELEASE: Because extended static pressure can be detrimental to the body’s normal circulatory flow, Sequential Pulse Technology releases the hold pressures once they are no longer needed to prevent backflow. By releasing the hold pressure in each zone as soon as possible, each portion of the limb gains maximal rest time without a significant pause between compression cycles.

Cryotherapy

What is Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC)?

WBC exposes the skin to cold temperatures.  The “Cryo-Zone” starts at -166 Degrees Fahrenheit and will go as low as -319.  This causes the body to go into “survival mode” and strips the muscle tissue, joints, and skin of red blood cells and brings it all back to the core (vasoconstriction).  During this process the body circulates the blood through the cardiovascular system many more times than normal.  Each time blood passes through the cardiovascular system it is stripped of toxins and supplied with more oxygen, nutrients, and enzymes.  When you step out of the cryo chamber all this enriched blood flows back to your muscles, joints, and skin (vasodilation).  This is what speeds up recovery time, decreases inflammation, etc.  During this whole process endorphins are released which relieves pain and elevates your mood.

Is Whole Body Cryotherapy safe?

Yes, absolutely.  The nitrogen used to cool the air around your body is vented outside.  Even if a little of the nitrogen gets into the room it is not a big deal because the air we breath is 78% nitrogen.  We have alarms and systems in place to mitigate the risk of too much nitrogen getting in the air.  There will be a certified Cryotherapy technician in the room throughout your entire treatment.

Is there anybody who should not use Whole Body Cryotherapy?

Yes. The following conditions are contraindications to Whole Body Cryotherapy:

  • Pregnancy
  • Severe Hypertension (BP> 180/100)
  • Acute or recent myocardial infarction
  • Unstable angina pectoris
  • Arrhythmia
  • Symptomatic cardio vascular disease
  • Cardiac pacemaker
  • Cardiac Stint within the previous 6 months
  • Peripheral arterial occlusive disease
  • Venous thrombosis
  • Acute or recent cerebral vascular accident
  • COPD
  • Uncontrolled seizures
  • Fever
  • Tumor disease
  • Symptomatic-lung disorders
  • Bleeding disorders
  • Severe anemia
  • Infection
  • Cold allergy
  • Acute kidney and urinary tract diseases
  • Open Wounds
  • Ischemic heart disease
How long does a session take?

A WBC session lasts a maximum of 3 minutes.  You can end a session before 3 minutes if you wish, simply by stepping out of the chamber.  You should plan on your entire visit lasting around 15 minutes to account for changing before and after the session.

What do I wear?

We provide wool gloves and socks to be worn.  We will also provide a robe and footwear to wear into the chamber. Men must wear underwear, preferably not compression shorts.  Women may choose to wear their underwear or a swimsuit but can go in without either if they wish.  If wearing a bra please make sure it does not have any metal clasps.  All metal jewelry below the neck must be removed.

Is it comfortable?

The cold is a dry, gaseous cold, which makes it tolerable to people who consider themselves cold intolerable.  Because it is a dry cold, -250 degrees in a cryo chamber is much more tolerable than 30 degrees in an ice bath.  Most clients describe the feeling as “awakening” or something similar, some people experience a “pins-and-needles” that disappears immediately when the session ends.

How will I feel after a session?

During each session your body releases endorphins, which are hormones that make you energetic and feel good.  This feeling can last up to 6-8 hours after the first session with the feeling lasting longer after subsequent sessions.  Many clients claim to have the best night of sleep in their life after a WBC session.

How many sessions do I need to complete for optimal results?

After your first session you will feel some positive benefits.  This is mainly because of the endorphins that are released and cause an elevated mood and pain relief.  To get maximum results from WBC we recommend completing 10-15 sessions in the first month.  After achieving these optimal results you can decide whether to keep coming at the same rate or slowing spacing your sessions out.  Everybody has a different WBC schedule that works best for him or her.  For this reason, and because it is our most popular package, we provide unlimited monthly memberships.

Do I have to take a shower before/after?

No, the session is completely dry and you need to be completely dry before entering a session.  Many people come in for their sessions over lunch or on their way to/from work.

Floatation Therapy

What Should I do to prepare?

Avoid shaving or waxing for at least 24 hours prior to your float.  Avoid use stimulants such as caffeine for several hours beforehand.  Eat a meal about 60-90 minutes prior to your appointment so that you aren’t hungry or overly full while you float.

What do I need to bring with me?

Nothing but yourself and an excited and open mind. We provide eco-friendly shampoo, conditioner and body wash for your pre and post-float shower. We also provide towels, robes, earplugs, q-tips and hair dryers. You float in your birthday suit since our float pods and showers are each in their own private room. Feel free to bring any personal items such as a brush or makeup for after your float. Don’t forget your contact lens case if you wear contacts and a hair tie if you have long hair.

What should I expect the experience to be like?

It naturally varies from person to person. To get the most out of your experience though, you should try to fully relax like you would if you were meditating. Once you learn to let go and fully relax, you’ll really start to enjoy the experience to the fullest.  It often takes a couple of float sessions for people to learn to relax and just be.  We recommend committing to at least 3 floats. By the second and third float you are more prepared to fully ease into the experience and begin your real journey with floatation therapy.

How are the pods kept clean?

Besides the required pre-float shower, each tank has a 3 step filtering process that consists of a micron filter, an ultra-violet and ozone purification system and a 35% solution of hydrogen peroxide– a safe alternative to chlorine and bromine. Skimmers are used to keep the surface clear.  All the water in our float tanks are filtered 5 times between every single client. And, the high concentration of Epsom Salt creates an environment which inhibits the growth of bacteria. Our owner, Josh Giles, has his pool operator’s license and maintains proper chemistry of the water, testing the water multiple times every day. We are closed on Mondays to perform a deep cleaning of the entire space to keep our float suites clean and pristine.

What if water gets in my eyes or ears?

We provide ear plugs with every float that you may use (some people prefer not to use them).  If you do use them you should put them in before your shower while your hands and ears are still dry.   If you end up with salt water in your ears its no big deal.  We provide a vinegar water rinse that will flush all the salt out.  To help prevent water from getting in your eyes, dry your face off before you enter the float pod.  A spray bottle of fresh water and a hand towel are hanging in every pod if you accidentally splash salt water into your eyes.

Can I float if I’m menstruating?

Yes.  Just follow the same protocol you would for a swimming pool.

Do I get dehydrated from soaking for so long?

No. Your skin doesn’t even prune up, but it does become silky soft afterwards.

Can I drown if I fall asleep in there?

No, some people fall asleep, but the water is so buoyant that you stay afloat.  The worst that can happen is waking up from getting salt water in your eyes.

Can I float if I'm pregnant?

Definitely! We encourage floating during pregnancy as pregnant women love it. Not only does floating allow you to take a time-out from the added stress of pregnancy, but the strain from the added weight is taken off your body by floating in the weightless environment. If you are concerned for any reason, double-check with your physician.

Why do you only offer 90 minute floats?

Clinical studies show that it typically takes 45 minutes to get to the Theta brain waves.  These are the brain waves that you aim for while meditating (The more meditating and floating experience you have the less time it will take to get to the Theta waves). We don’t want people to just be getting to the good stuff when their float ends.  That being said, you are free to get out at anytime. Please plan on being here for 2 hours. This allows for pre and post float showers, 90 minutes of floating, and some time to relax with a glass of tea or water after your float.

What if I'm claustrophobic?

The sensation of floating is more like floating in outer space than a confined area, and you are always in total control of your float. Feel free to leave the float tank door open or the lights or music on.  Or book your float in our Superior Float Room, the ceiling is over 7 feet tall. Enter and exit the Pod or Float Room any time you wish.

Can I float if I dyed my hair?

Yes you can, but you will need to wait a minimum of 10 days after you dye it to give your new color time to set in completely.  If your hair is still bleeding in the shower after 10 days please wait to come float until it stops bleeding.

Are there any age or weight limitations?

No. The physical and mental benefits are as useful to children as they are to adults, but some may lack the mental discipline for more meditative floating. Similarly, there is no upper age limit. You’ll experience all the same benefits and enjoy some respite from those nagging aches and pains that may seem a bit more persistent as things slow down as we age. We require permission wavers signed for anyone under 18, and a parent must be present for those under 16. If you have mobility issues and might need help getting in and out of the float tank, you will need to bring a helper as we cannot help you in and out for liability reasons. As long as you can safely get in and out of the tank, you are safe to float regardless of your weight.

How often should I float?

It’s completely up to you, however when you first start floating, it’s ideal if you float a few times within a fairly short period such as 3 floats within 2-4 weeks. We know this isn’t always possible and most people will still benefit from even just one float. We encourage you to float regularly, say monthly, weekly or more, for long-term benefits such as helping to maintain reduced stress levels, using it for meditation and improving overall well-being. The best prices we offer come from our memberships. Check out our Pricing page for information on how to become a member today.

Is there anyone who shouldn't float?

Floating is safe for almost everyone. People with conditions such as the following should not float: incontinence, uncontrolled epilepsy, open wounds, an infectious disease, drug or alcohol intoxication or kidney problems. If you have a severe medical condition, consult your physician. You should wait 4 weeks after receiving a tattoo to float so that it has time to heal and set.

Halotherapy

What is Halotherapy?

Halotherapy, also referred to as Salt Therapy or Dry Salt Therapy, is a drug-free therapy that recreates the microclimate of a salt cave/mine.  Halotherapy can help treat respiratory conditions such as cold, flu, allergies, asthma, bronchitis, cystic fibrosis, sinus infections, sinusitis, rhinitis, hay fever, and emphysema.  In addition, the anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties of Halotherapy effectively treat skin conditions such as Eczema, Dermatitis, and Psoriasis.  Halotherapy can enhance athletic abilities and singing performances by improving lung function and increasing lung capacity/stamina.  Halotherapy helps build your immune system with no side effects.

How does salt therapy work?

The fundamental method of action in Halotherapy is the dry aerosol of Sodium Chloride that has a particle size of 1-5 microns. The dry salt aerosol is released into the salt room via a Halogenerator. In addition, one whole wall of the room is covered with imported Himalayan Salt.

This process assists with the reduction of inflammation within the airways, which opens constricted airway passages and helps clear mucus.

Who can benefit from Salt Therapy treatment?

Salt therapy may help improve symptoms of respiratory and skin conditions for people of all ages, beginning at 6 months. In addtion, people without a condition can also benefit from Halotherapy’s natural strengthening of the immune system.

What conditions and symptoms are improved by dry salt therapy?

Symptoms of respiratory conditions:  Allergies, Cystic Fibrosis, Sinusitis, Smoker’s Cough, Asthma, Bronchitis, Sinus Infections, Emphysema, Wheezing, Rhinitis, Hay fever, COPD, and Ear Infections.

Symptoms of skin conditions: Dermatitis, Psoriasis, Eczema, and Acne.

Dry salt therapy may also provide a general improvement of: Headaches, Stress and Fatigue, Cold/Flu, and Snoring. In addtion, athletes and singers especially enjoy increased lung capacity.

What results can patients expect?

While we make no claims about fixed results, Halotherapy is naturally an anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial. Since 1980, founder of Halotherapy, Dr. Alina Chervinskaya, M.D., Ph.D., has shown through her extensive research that there are many positive effects of this treatment.  In Europe, doctors have acknowledged that salt therapy is effective in treating patients as prescription medications have been reduced, symptoms of respiratory conditions are improved and breathing ultimately becomes easier.

What does it feel like?

Halotherapy is an overall relaxing and peaceful experience since the only action required is regular breathing. You may taste saltiness.  After a session, most of our clients feel rejuvenated and relaxed.

What should I wear during Salt Therapy?

Wear comfortable clothing. If you would like to target skin conditions, then wear minimal clothing such as a tank top and shorts.  Note that the room is kept around 70 degrees and others will be in the room.  Please refrain from wearing any perfumes or colognes.

How long is a session?

Sessions are 45 minutes.  There is a 15-minute gap between each session in order to filter and purify the room.

How many treatments will I need?

Based on European clinical research, it is recommended that a course of treatment should be between 6-16 sessions over 4-8 weeks. Every individual will respond differently depending on the nature and severity of his or her condition. It is also important to maintain your treatments to achieve long-term results.

Could I pick up germs while I am in the salt room? How is it cleaned?

Salt is anti-bacterial, which means that it creates a self-cleansing, sterile environment. In addtion, after each treatment we also disinfect the salt rooms with cleaning products, and the air is ventilated for a 15-minute period.

Does salt therapy produce any adverse side effects?

Clients rarely experience any adverse side effects. However, it is not uncommon to feel a small tickle in your throat, a cough for a day or two, and/or draining of the nasal passages, which is your system working to eliminate excess mucus. Rarely, one may endure a slight skin irritation, if their skin is hypersensitive.

When should Halotherapy be avoided?

Avoid using Halotherapy during the acute or contagious phase of any illness, including the following: colds, flu, infections accompanied by fever, acute active tuberculosis, cardiac insufficiency, COPD in the third stage, bleeding, spitting up of blood, alcohol or drug intoxication, unstable or uncontrolled hypertension, and acute stages of respiratory diseases.

NormaTec

How long has NormaTec been around?

NormaTec was founded in 1998 by Laura F. Jacobs, MD, PhD, in response to a desperate need for new technology to rapidly and non-invasively treat circulation-related disorders. In 2002, the company introduced the NormaTec PCD (Pneumatic Compression Device), an FDA-cleared medical device that yields highly effective clinical results for patients with peripheral vascular diseases. After hearing reports from athletes that they were using their NormaTec Systems for workout and performance recovery (not just acute injuries), NormaTec started its Athlete Technologies division in 2007. Today, many of the world’s best athletes regularly use their NormaTec Recovery Systems for maximum performance recovery.

How does the NormaTec Recovery System Work?

The most important element for effective compression is the massage pattern. NormaTec’s founder, Laura F. Jacobs, MD, PhD, a physician bioengineer, realized this fundamental principle when she developed and patented the Sequential Pulse Pneumatic Waveform. Unlike more simplistic compression patterns, NormaTec Pulse Technology is based on normal physiology, and it synergistically combines three distinctive massage techniques to speed the body’s normal recovery process: pulsing compression, gradients, and distal release. Through these mechanisms, the NormaTec Recovery System maximizes circulation throughout the body to help you train harder, recover faster, and perform better.

Why isn’t there ice in the NormaTec Recovery System?

Ice is a vasoconstrictor; it constricts your vessels and decreases blood flow. While this is beneficial in the acute phase of an injury to reduce immediate inflammation, in the long run it actually impairs healing and recovery. On the other hand, the NormaTec Recovery System uses NormaTec Pulse Technology to increase circulation and blood flow.

What makes NormaTec Recovery Systems the best?

Compression technology has been around for decades in both static and simple dynamic forms. But the NormaTec Pulse Technology found in NormaTec Recovery Systems takes dynamic compression to a new level. This unique pneumatic waveform, which is exclusive to NormaTec products, is designed to externally compress the limbs in a way that mimics normal physiology, featuring a sophisticated pulsing, gradient, and distal release compression pattern. Initially developed for medical patients with severe circulatory and peripheral vascular disorders, the NormaTec Recovery System is now the most effective recovery tool for athletes who want maximum performance recovery.

When and for how long should I use my NormaTec System?

The NormaTec Recovery System can be used both before and after exercise, whether it is routine training or high-level competition.

Before exercise, the NormaTec acts as a high-tech massage to warm up your muscles. Pre-workout sessions are generally up to 30 minutes long with a moderate intensity level.

Using the NormaTec Recovery System after intense exercise will significantly speed up your recovery process, allowing you to train harder and perform better. We recommend using your NormaTec within a few hours after exercise to expedite your recovery process. Post-workout recovery sessions are generally 30 to 60 minutes long with a moderate to high intensity level (it is safe to pump as long as you want). Sit back, relax, and enjoy the high-tech massage found only in a NormaTec Recovery System.

At Total Rejuvenation we offer 30 and 60 minute sessions for sale to anybody.  Monthly members of any of our services have unlimited NormaTec use for free.

Josh Giles was born and raised in Cedar Rapids, IA. In 2012, he graduated from Xavier High School. During his time there he enjoyed playing football and running track. Josh graduated from The University of Iowa in 2016 with a degree in Finance and Entrepreneurial Management.

After his college studies, Josh attended the National Float Conference in Portland. For four full days, he learned about the benefits of floating and how opening a float center would benefit many people in his community. He also had the opportunity to attend an all-day seminar that was being held by the leading cryotherapy machine provider in the United States.

Josh has always had the goal of owning his own business. He became extremely interested in floating after reading an article about it online. After doing more research about the benefits of floating, Josh decided he had to try it for himself. After experiencing his first floating session in Des Moines, Josh knew he wanted to bring the experience to the Cedar Rapids community.

A personal note from Josh:

I love the fact that floating has both physical and mental benefits. I then heard about cryotherapy and halotherapy and added them to my business because both of them can help relieve pain and discomfort in non-medicinal ways. I saw this as a way of helping even more people feel better.

In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my friends and family, attending Packers games,  working out, and traveling. I was very fortunate to grow up in a family that enjoys traveling. This has allowed me to visit 30 states and 10 countries.
